A U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation initiative to find work for former military personnel resulted in 500,000 veterans and their spouses landing jobs since 2012, the organization announced Tuesday.
More than 2,000 businesses hired veterans as part of the foundation's "Hiring 500,000 Heroes" campaign, which kicked off three years ago with a $4.5 million donation from Capital One Financial Corp. The foundation used the money to host hiring events, provide mentorship programs and develop tools to help veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses find employment.
"The success of Hiring 500,000 Heroes shows that the business community is ready and willing to give our veterans and military families what they deserve—great jobs and a bright future," Chamber CEO Tom Donohue said. "We have a deep appreciation for the sacrifices that have been made by the military community, and will continue to honor their dedication with opportunity."
The campaign received help from the International Franchise Association and the foundation's Employment Advisory Councils, which educated employers on the benefits of hiring veterans and military spouses.
Hiring 500,000 Heroes is part of the foundation's Hiring Our Heroes program.
